Following the original publication of Shepard in 1960 on the successful cultivation of Mycobacterium leprae in the foot pad of mice, a great amount of experimental works on animal transmission of Myco. leprae has been made. It is now widely accepted that Myco. leprae can he grown in a variety of rodents including the mouse. M.D
In this communication major experimental works made since 1960 on the cultivation of Myco. leprae are extensively reviewed and analyzed in regard to 1) animal inoculation studies, 2) cultivation experiments in tissue culture systems and 3) growth attempts on lifeless cell-free media.
